Cathie Tanaka's excellent history of the Cann's Grant area is a very readable and enlightening story of the evolution of what has become the Sailor Streets precinct in Artarmon. The area came to life in a time in Australia's history just after the celebration of Federation and before her entry into the First World War. The roots go back to the early days of settlement, where streets were named after Queen Elizabeth I's admirals. The present land was part of the original land grant to early settlers in the early 1800's and granted to Daniel Cann in the period between 1880 and 1891 for the purposes of farming and grazing.
